There are few reports for this species from southern Navajo County, although the bird checklist for the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest lists this species as uncommon in status. The bird was observed being mobbed by birds after grabbing a juvenile Chipping Sparrow. Possibly the same bird was heard at dawn on July 18 by the same observer.

There are few reports from southern Navajo County and the presence of two south of Heber and at least one in Heber (although possibly one of these two individuals) after the monsoon season, suggests possible breeding in the patches of forest that survived the Rodeo-Chediski fire of 2002 near Heber. One bird was observed being mobbed by a mixed species flock and one was heard calling off in the distance near the intersection of Forest Roads 86 and 87 near Legacy Ranch south of Heber. The location the owls was at UTM12 533876E 3806238N (NAD 83).
