Northern Shrike (Lanius excubitor), Camp Verde, Yavapai County

This Northern Shrike was discovered on 3 January 2009 on the Campe Verde Christmas Bird count by Tom Linda, Brooks Hart, Terance Blows and Chris Sanderson in Wikiup Draw near Wickiup Tank, just west of Walker Mountain, at coordinates N34 degrees 37 minutes 023 seconds W111 degrees 43 minutes 51 seconds.  It was photographed by Chris Sanderson at the same time.

Northern Shrikes are rare winter visitors to Northern Arizona and in recent years have not been found reliably anywhere in the state.   They are especially rare anywhere south of the Mogollon Rim.

Thin black mask barely extending to the base of the bill and the white eyering are good field marks visible in the photographs.
