Magnificent Hummingbird (Eugenes fulgens), Cave Springs Campground, Oak Creek Canyon, Coconino County

This male Magnificent Hummingbird was photographed by Gary Botello on 17 April 2010.

While still rare and local, Magnificent Hummingbirds have become increasingly regular in Northern Arizona in recent years.  According to the Arizona Breeding Bird Atlas, observations of Magnificent Hummingbirds north of SE Arizona have increased greatly since 1980, likely due in part to increased availability of hummingbird feeders.  Their status at this specific location is unclear, but they were observed here for several successive summers by atlasers in the 1990s.
