Berylline Hummingbirds (Amazilia beryllina), Madera Canyon, Pima County

These Berylline Hummingbirds were discovered and photographed by Laurens Halsey at the Madera Kubo Gift shop.  The female was first seen on 21 May 2010 and was photographed on 3 June 2010.  The male was first seen and photographed on 9 June 2010.  Berylline Hummingbirds were also reported on 12 May 2010 by Gavin Bieber and Barry Zimmer much further down the canyon near Proctor Road.  It is not know if these are the same birds. 

Berylline Hummingbird is a rare but increasing summer visitor to the mountains of SE Arizona. It has bred.

Green hummingbird with diagnostic rufous wing panels.  Male with green throat, female with gray throat.
