Short-billed Dowitcher (Limnodromus griseus), Glendale Recharge Ponds, Maricopa County

This Short-billed Dowitcher was photographed by Tommy DeBardeleben on 28 August 2011

This is one of three juvenile Short-billed Dowitchers I found during the evening at the Glendale Recharge Ponds on August 28th, 2011.

Rare spring migrant and uncommon fall migrant. This fall has had amazing numbers.

Juvenile bird. Buffy orange breast (not shown as well in these pictures due to lighting), a lot of white on the tail, very brightly colored on the back, with "tiger-striped tertails" which are distinctive for juvenile Short-billed Dowitcher (blurry but noticable in these pics). The three birds all vocalized throughout the evening, which is distinctive as well compared to a Long-billed Dowitcher.
