Summer tanager (Piranga rubra), V-V visitor Center Wet Beaver Creek, Yavapai, County

This Summer tanager was found by Rich Armstrong, Eric Gofreed, Sam Hough, and Vic Nelson and photographed by Vic Nelson on 05 January 2014

Though a regular and increasing winter visitor to the southeast portion of the state, Summer Tanagers remain scarce in winter elsewhere.

Bright red, slight crest. No dusky on auriculars or wings. Nearly all winter specimens from the western United States are of the eastern nominate subspecies rather than one of the breeding western subspecies.
