Least Grebe (Tachybaptus dominicus), California Gulch Dam, Santa Cruz County

These Least Grebes were found and photographed by Richard Fray on 28 August 2014

A casual straggler to ponds in southern Arizona, this species bred at nearby Peņa Blanca Lake, but has only been reported sporadically there since the introduction of Largemouth Bass to the lake. Presumed to have breed at this location which would represent the first confirmed breeding for the state away from Peņa Blanca Lake.

Small uniformly gray grebe with thin bill and bright yellow eyes.
