Plain-capped Starthroat (Heliomaster constantii), Foothill Rd feeders (AKA Jasper's) Portal, Cochise County

This Plain-capped Starthroat was found by Howard King on 6 July 2014 and photographed by Jeffrey Cohen on 15 August 2014

Rare summer visitor to SE Arizona. Becoming more regular, annual since 2007. Most records of Plain-capped Starthroat in Arizona come from the numerous feeding stations at middle elevations in the southeast region of the state, and most have occurred from late June through September. Most birds have been in wing molt possibly following the rains north to molt. Some reports may be of the same bird wandering or returning birds.

Large size, very large white malar stripe, and large white patch on lower back. Note the molt limit in the coverts and primaries.
