Short-tailed Hawk (Buteo brachyurus), Marshall Gulch, Pima County

These Short-tailed Hawks were photographed by Michael O'Brien on 31 July 2014

Reported off and on from this area since June. These two photos show recognizably different individuals (note the different patterns of molt in the primaries).

Short-tailed Hawk has been expanding its range northward and increasing in Arizona for the last several years and it has bred.

Both light morph adults soaring with a Red-tail; distinctly smaller than RTHA; clean white below with strongly two-toned wings; somewhat pointed but broad wings, wingtips curled up slightly while soaring.
