Barrow's Goldeneye (Bucephala islandica), Big Springs Environmental Study Area, Pinetop, Navajo County

This Barrow's Goldeneye was found and photographed by Sarah Fish on 07 January 2015

Casual in winter away from the Colorado River, this is likely a first record for Navajo County

Female bird with orange bill with rounded lower edge, shorter white wing patch than Common Goldeneye would have. Note how the head shape can appear to change in the various photos depending on if the bird is at rest or diving. The last photo provides a useful comparison with Common Goldeneye (front); see also this article by David Sibely for more information on identification.
