Plain-capped Starthroat (Heliomaster constantii), Tucson Audubon's Paton Center for Hummingbirds, Santa Cruz County

This Plain-capped Starthroat was found and photographed by Katherine Cudney on 29 September 2015

A Plain-capped Starthroat has been present at a near by Patagonia residence where it was found by Randy Moore on 9 September 2015 and present through 27 September. Though this is the first report from the Paton Center there is a strong possibility they are the same individuals.

Rare summer visitor to SE Arizona. Becoming more regular, annual since 2007. Most records of Plain-capped Starthroat in Arizona come from the numerous feeding stations at middle elevations in the southeast region of the state, and most have occurred from late June through September. Most birds have been in wing molt possibly following the rains north to molt; from this photo it is difficult to tell whether the wings are in active molt. Some reports may be of returning birds.

Large size, ruby gorget, very large white malar and line behind the eye as well as on the rump.
