Purple Gallinule (Porphyrio martinica), Cook's Lake near Dudleyville, Pinal County

This Purple Gallinule was found by K. Lease on 15 July 1983 and photographed by Matthew O'Brien on the same date.

Matthew writes "This was documented at the time in Volume 37 number 6 of American Birds - November-December 1983. At that time the magazine was in black-and-white and the photo did not reproduce that well. It was taken with Kodachrome 64 slide film. I thought that adding it to your collection would expose it to more birders, with a better image."

Rare, scattered reports in summer at permanent water sites. Primarily in southmost and southeast Arizona.

Unmistakable in adult plumage.
