Broad-winged Hawk (Buteo platypterus), Dateland, Yuma County

This Broad-winged Hawk was found and photographed by Matt Victoria on 15 April 2017

Casual in spring in Arizona, but increasingly reported in recent years in Arizona and throughout the western US. This is a second Yuma County record with a prior ABC accepted April record from 2007 at Imperial NWR.

Small Buteo with rufous barring below, broad black and white bands on the tail, fairly pointed wings and a light underwing with dark border.
