Anna's x Broad-billed Hummingbird (Calypte anna x Cynanthus latirostris), McDowell Mtn. Ranch, Maricopa CountyThis
probable Anna's x Broad-billed Hummingbird hybrid was
found by Brian Ison on 15 July 2017 and photographed by
him on multiple dates into late August.
Hummingbird hybrids are regularly documented and both
Anna's and Broad-billed have been documented hybridizing
with other species. However this is possibly the first
documentation of a hybrid between these two species
though there has been a least one possible Costa's (C.
costae) x Broad-billed. Broad-billed Hummingbird
has been expanding north in Arizona and has recently
become regular locally in the Phoenix area, while Anna's
has been a common breeder in the Phoenix since the
1970's after expanding east. Molting male most similar to a Broad-billed
Hummingbird with long, dark notched tail, some red to
the base of the bill (difficult to see in the field),
dark gorget. Features of Anna's include the slightly flared
gorget, more mottled underparts, and spotted undertail
coverts. Sound recordings can be found
here.
