Louisiana Waterthrush (Parkesia motacilla), Walnut Canyon Lakes, Flagstaff, Coconino County
This Louisiana Waterthrush was
found by Kathie Schroeck on 01 April 2018 and
photographed by BB Oros on the same date and by
Gary Botello on 02 April 2018
A very sparse transient and winter resident in southeastern Arizona, this is apparently the third documented record of this species for Coconino County. The date is typical of a spring migrant.
The throat of this bird is unmarked and clean
white, and the supercilium of this bird broadens behind
the eye and is bright white, both good for a Louisiana.
An excellent mark is the color of the flanks. In
Northerns the underparts can range from yellow to
off-white, whereas in Louisiana the underparts are white
with a distinct buffy wash along the flank, with broad
blurry flank streaking.
