Likely hybrid Summer x Western Tanager (Piranga ludoviciana X P. rubra), Ramsey Canyon, Cochise County

This likely hybrid Summer x Western Tanager (Piranga ludoviciana X P. rubra) was found and photographed by Will Brooks on 27 May 2018

Rarely recorded hybrid, but see here for information about another individual in Arizona that has returned for multiple years.

Structure, yellow tones to body plumage with redder face, and black wings with wing bars indicate one parent is a Western Tanager. Underparts mottled reddish over yellow. Wing pattern like western, except yellowish wingbars. The red tones to the underparts and wing bars indicate the other parent is not a Flame-colored which is more likely at this location. A hybrid with Hepatic is difficult to rule out but the large paler bill indicates Summer.
