Hybrid Hummingbird, Boyce Thompson Arboretum, Pinal County

This unusual hummingbird was photographed at Boyce Thompson Arboretum on 3 September 2006 by Jack Holloway. It shows features suggesting Violet-crowned Hummingbird but Jack noted the green of the face, flecks in the neck/flanks, the olive/bronze of the back, and the black/red bill were not consistent with that species. It appears to be a hybrid between Violet-crowned and Broad-billed hummingbirds. Sheri Williamson commented that VC x BB has been recorded before, but only once as far as I know - a specimen collected in Sonora by Brewster in the 1890s and originally
described as a new species. (Note the rufous in the tail in some photos appears to be an artifact.)
