Little Blue Heron (Egretta caerulea), Rio Salado, Maricopa County

What may be the offspring of the two Little Blue Herons present at Rio Salado all summer, (one of the adults pictured below), and therefore a first potential breeding record of Little Blue Heron in Maricopa County, was photographed at Rio Salado by Pierre Deviche on 26 September 2006.  However, the identification of this bird is uncertain because the lores appear to have some pale yellow.

Little Blue Heron is a casual spring and summer visitor to southern Arizona. Most Maricopa County records are from May and mid-July to mid-August. This striking adult was found at Rio Salado in Phoenix on 5/26/06 by Tom Gaskill and nicely documented with this photo by Oliver Niehuis on 5/29/06.
