Yellow-crowned Night-Heron

Yellow-crowned Night-Heron

Painted Rock Dam, Maricopa County

14 August 2005 photos by Roy Jones

This juvenile Yellow-crowned Night-Heron was found below Painted Rock Dam on 13 August 2005 by Bill Grossi. These photos were taken on 14 August by Roy Jones.

According to Mark Stevenson, there are three prior Arizona records of Yellow-crowned Night-Heron. The first physically documented record for Arizona was of one photographed at Dudleyville 8 May 16 June 1984 (O. Scott, photo by G. Monson). Two earlier records were published by Monson and Phillips (1981), from Tucson 26 May 1968 (C. Coston, G. Gregg) and Imperial Dam 17 April 1973 (R. Webster). (The SE AZ bird-finding guides indicate additional observations these were apparently not reviewed by the Arizona Bird Committee.)
